The Costa Del Sol

The Mediterranean coastline of Southern Spain from Nerja to Gibraltar is one of the world’s most famous tourist attractions – known as the Costa del Sol. With a typical Mediterranean clime, mild winters, hot summers, little rain and an average annual temperature of 18 degrees, it’s the place for sun lovers.

With many tourist developments, plenty of resorts, villa developments, marinas and golf courses there is something for everybody whilst, underneath the neon and glitz, remain the virtues that enchanted its early visitors - clean air, an unpolluted atmosphere and a coastline of warm, blue water and long stretches of beaches, coves, cliffs and gentle mountains which contrast beautifully.

Towns to the West of Malaga

Torremolinos

Once a primitive village of fishermen and millers, it was here that the tourist boom began in the 1950’s. Only 12 km from the capital of Malaga and a mere 7 km from its international airport, it’s big, bold and brash. The mills have disappeared, leaving their names to hotels, roads and avenues. Some remnants of the past still remain and The Carihuela, the old fishing quarter, is a good place to sample the Malagan fried fish dish, percaito frito, or fritura malaguena.

Benalmadena

Benalmadena is a coastal town perched high on the mountains. Its name derives from Arabic, meaning “Son of the Mines”. Its elevated position witnessed the first passing of the Phoenicians and Romans and it still boasts the remains of a Roman arch, a mosque and three watchtowers, as well as Roman villas and salting houses. After the Reconquest, the Catholic Kings chose it as their command centre.

Benalmadena consists of three rather different villages:

  • Benalmadena Pueblo – With typical Andalusian architecture, white houses and narrow streets, with balconies overflowing with flowers. The Gardens were designed by Cesar Manrique and a visit to the Pre-Columbian Museum is worthwhile.
  • Arroya de la Miel - The Flamenco shows in the “tabao”, the discotheque, and “tapas”, the excellent sea food and the fried-fish dish – pescaito frito – delight visitors. In the centre there stands a modern, Andalusian-style building, the House of Culture. It also boasts excellent sports facilities.
  • Benalmadena Costa – Nine kilometres of coast, warm, calm water and one of the most important marinas in Spain. Equally worthy of note are the golf courses and the luxurious Torrequebrada Casino which, as well as gambling, offers excellent facilities for business meetings and conferences.

Fuengirola

A coastal town connecting with Carvajal and Los Boliches. Has the longest promenade on the Costa del Sol and offers an excellent market.

Mijas

The Mijas mountain range is known as “The Lung of the Costa del Sol” due to its dense pine woods. Amongst the woods lies the Moorish whitewashed town of Mijas. Perched on a terrace of 500m above Fuengirola and the sea, from its elevated position you can enjoy a view of the entire Costa del Sol and even the African mountains. It may be a tourist trap, but it’s an agreeable one! Well kept and sparkling from the mountain air, the streets are full of bars and restaurants. The town centre follows the classic Arab structure of narrow streets and whitewashed walls and has been home to artists and foreigners, attracted by its picturesque ness and the beauty of the surrounding countryside.

Coin

Lying on the banks of the River Seco in a beautiful valley, Coin is a small farming village famous for the quality of its fruit and vegetables. There’s an Arabian Castle, where, according to legend, Christopher Columbus was part of the Catholic Kings’ entourage during the siege and surrender of this village.

Ojen

Perched at an altitude of 200 m near to Marbella and the centre for excursions to the Sierra Blanca mountain range. A typical Arabic town centre, steep, narrow streets and a parish church that was once a mosque.

Marbella

The jet-set resort – with prices to match! Located in the Via Augusta, the Roman road which linked Rome to the Tartessos, at the foot of the Blanco mountain range, Malaga City is the place for high quality tourism. The old quarter is partly surrounded by walls and an Arab castle.

San Pedro of Alcantara, one of Marbella’s districts, is a national tourist resort owing to the ruins of an important Roman colony called Silniana, where valuable mosaics are preserved, and the hot springs of La Boveda. At Linda Vista lie the remains of the paleochristian basilica, Vega del Mar, which was used as a burial ground by the Visigoths.

There are three ports within Marbella district, including the famous Puerto Banus, which was built in the early 1970’s and rapidly became the place for the younger smart set. The resort offers sailing, windsurfing, jet skiing during the daytime, as well as smart restaurants, noisy bars and even noisier discos at night!
